Newsletter Summer 2019

Hello!     I hope you are enjoying your summer!  I'm getting my 'troops' lined up for Fall and wanted to see if you're interested in joining. I'm quite honored that the majority of last Spring's students are returning.      I am  teaching a beginning-intermediate  oil painting class on Thursday afternoons from 2-5pm on Sept 19  and 26 that will continue each month.  I have one spot open. Learn how to paint without the nasty petroleum solvents but using traditional oils.  The cost is $70 for 2 classes or $35/class based on paying for a month at a time.   I do sometimes have drop in spots available for some of the classes. This weekend is Loveland's big art weekend!  I am participating in Art in the Park  Saturday and Sunday.  Besides volunteering, I am sharing a booth with other Thompson Valley Art League Members.  I have framed originals  a bin full of originals and a few prints. I made the Reporter Herald for an article about the 4th Street Gallery Experience last month.  This has been a fun opportunity to show my work with 6 her professional artists.    Flathead Valley oil  Finally, I am participating in the Estes Valley Plein Air 2019. Check the website for special events.  The final show is on Aug 24 at the Art Center of Estes Park.  All are invited!  I'm looking forward to painting in Rocky Mountain National Park painting the inspiring views. Solvent free oil painting classes

 In my Thursday morning oil painting classes (Loveland, Colorado) I cover a variety of material.  In this project we were studying clouds.  We started with a simple black and white value scale and painted a gray monochromatic thumbnail proportional to the canvas we planned on painting.

Learning about composition, value & underpainting

 In my classes we play with different subject matter, techniques and color theory/experiments.  My goal is to teach you how to paint on your own.  We use traditional oil paints but do not use the dangerous or even odorless solvents as I find they are just as toxic as the rest.  I will teach you to safely paint without the use of them.  I currently have one opening in my class that has a maximum of 6 students.  Contact me for more information.

I am proud to announce that "Joy Ride" (oil) was accepted in the 32nd Annual National Juried Fine Art & Photography Show and Sale in Louisville, Colorado.  I painted this horizontal original oil after plein air painting in Rocky Mountain National Park (Colorado).  I had a perfect  Autumn day to paint outside.  Two riders on horseback literally rode through my scene and I knew I had to capture it in the studio.

Pallet Knife Poppies

 This month at the Lincoln Gallery I'm showing some local scenes from Loveland.  "Pallet Knife Poppies" is a 20" x 16" oil with lots of impasto pallet knife painting in the orange poppies.  This was inspired by a scene on the West side of Loveland with Longs Peak and the Colorado Front Range receding in the distance.

Oasis
"Oasis" is a 12" x 9" plein air oil painting of the Devil's Backbone park just outside of Loveland, Colorado.  This is a favorite hiking trail in Larimer County. The park is normally desert-like but in Spring the Cottonwood trees were showing off  their green. I had fun carving paint with my pallet knife as a result this painting has lots of impasto.

Stillness
I painted this 9" x 12"  original oil painting en plein air very early in the morning at Rivers Edge Natural area in Loveland, Colorado.  The water was perfectly reflective and caught my eye. This is a popular city park with lots to offer.

Calming

I painted "Calming", a 16 x 16" original oil of a clear stream in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, in my Oil Painting Class this past Spring of 2016.  I worked on the painting almost exclusively in front of my students during class.  Our theme was 'running water' and  I had each student pick an image they wanted to paint.  We started with an underpainting which is in essense the drawing under the painting.  The next step is to nail those darks as it's easy to loose them in oil painting.  I slowly added the local color and tweaked until I felt it was finished.  This painting sat on my easel almost done for a couple of weeks.  This helped me review what was needed.  "Calming" is currently  available, but contact me to find out the current status.

I am starting up my Solvent Free Oil Painting class September 15.  We meet from 9-12AM on Thursdays.  My classes are small at  6-7 students and I  have an opening.

The Milner-Schwarz house; plein air

In Loveland, Colorado we have a historic treasure: The Milner-Schwarz house.  The Loveland Historical Society has lovingly restored this 1873 brick home and it is now open for the public to enjoy. 

 I have had the pleasure of plein air painting this house a couple of times now.  This  summer, I painted this first original oil, "Little House on the Prairie".   I kept thinking off what it might have been like to live there 140 years ago while I was painting.  They have brought in an old windmill which I wanted to include in my painting.  I noticed the early morning shadow of the windmill on the brick home so decided to capture that.  When I plein air paint, I always try to capture the shadows first as they are fleeting.  This was especially important in this composition as I watched it moved across the house rather 

quickly. 

In the second painting, "Mrs. Milner's Irises", I was draw to the  colorful blooming irises in front of the classic front porch.  The Loveland Historical Society has also planted flower & vegetable gardens around the house along with fruit trees. This painting has some impasto.

The Lincoln Gallery's Regional Fine Art Show 2016

Off the Grid

I am pleased to announce that "Off the Grid" was accepted in the Thompson Valley Art League's 2016 Regional Fine Art Show.  I found this unique mountain landscape while visiting Marble, Colorado a few years ago. The light was just going over the cliffs surrounding me and illuminating this home off the grid.
 This year the Regional show had 300+ entries and accepted around 70.  I am honored to have my watercolor shown there for the month of June.  Please join me June 10, 2016 from 6-9 during the opening which is free to the public.

Impressions of Life, Love & Passion: a show of Art for Valentine's Day

I am participating in the  Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park's (Colorado) February (2016) art show "Impressions of Life, Love & Passion" this month.  I brought in a variety of original art that fit this theme.  "Love is in the Air" is a little mixed piece piece taking off on Lake Loveland & Valentine's day.  Every year Loveland celebrates Valentine's Day just a little more & has become quite the fun, loving event.  "Recharge" is a large oil with impasto of two Adirondack chairs with a bottle of red wine & two wine glasses in front of a perfect view of the mountains.

 I included "Escape" and "The Trumpet", two figures painted from life because they both depict a passion:  reading, enjoying the beach and playing the trumpet.

Loveland Art Studio Tour 2015

The Loveland Art Studio Tour is coming up!  On October 10-11 & 17-18, 2015 from 10-4 I open up my art studio to the public.  You can see where I and other artists create their art by following the included map.  I will also have paintings, framed & unframed and prints available for purchase.  I open up my studio once a year and this is the chance to come and see my art.  Bonus this year: they selected one of my paintings (The Loch) for the brochure and all promotional  materials.
There is a meet the artists opening at the Loveland Museum Gallery September 11, 2015 from 6-8pm. and an opening reception October 9th from f6-8pm.  You can pick up a free brochure with map at the Loveland Museum Gallery or at my studio.  I look forward to your visit!

Green

Shades of Green

Going Green

Happy St. Patty's Day!  I played with a watercolor technique with layers of  transparent watercolors with marijuana leaves.  I have painted this type of project with autumn leaves and flowers and thought it would be fun to play with hemp images.  Colorado has legalized recreational marijuana and other states are following.  Meanwhile, it's not illegal to paint or look at cannabis art so here you go.

"Shades of Green" is 18" x 24" and "Going Green" is 16" x 20".  Both original watercolors are painted on Arches Cold Press 140lb watercolor paper and are available for purchase.  Also prints and canvas giclees can be ordered for either at Fine Art America. Loose Moose

Loose Moose 

I have a love of pallet knife painting.  When my oil painting class requested a lesson on 'Van Gogh animals" I jumped to the task as I love his loose, swirling strokes.  When I start a painting I know will have very heavy impasto, I start with a good drawing and don't add the thick paint until I have a color theme and good composition in place.  When I'm ready to lay on the swirls of paint with a pallet knife, I get brave and ad more brilliant colors that the reference photo portrays.  I do ad up to a 50% dilution of either Gamblin's Solvent Free Gel or Resingel to my oil paint to speed up the drying time.  "" is 12" x 16", oil on linen.  Contact me for current availabilty.

Reserved: the process

Reserved 30" x 30" oil/sold

 I recently finished "Reserved".   I worked on this oil painting commission for many months.  My client had an idea for a painting that she wanted for above her fireplace. She really like my painting "Recharge" but decided to commission me to paint  an original oil of exactly what she had in mind. 
 She provided a good reference for Longs Peak (taken from the Peak to Peak Highway in Colorado adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park) but wanted to include the Adirondack chairs that I have painted frequently.  I composed the two chairs with the Longs Peak Autumn photo and painted the small "Table for Two".  I included the bottle of red wine and two  wine glasses to make the painting that much more inviting.  I wanted to make sure I was portraying what she had in mind before I went to the actual large square format.  She loved the small painting so I started "Reserved" on oil primed linen on gator-board (my favorite surface for oil).  I was pleased with the outcome of the painting and more importantly my client absolutely loved it.
"Table for Two" sold recently at the Grand Lake Art Gallery.     "Recharge" is still available for purchase.  To inquire about current availability, contact me.  Fine art prints and giclees of  "Reserved" can be ordered through Fine Art America.
