Autumn: Cottonwood Glow, part 18

Cottonwood Glow (oil)
"Cottonwood Glow" is a 4.5" x 10" plein air oil I painted alla prima. I find I especially like to use a pallet knife and leave impasto on the surface when I paint quickly outside.  This painting is for sale, currently at Mountain Living Studio in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Autumn: Colorado Aspen Groves, part 17

I painted these two watercolors as part of a demonstration for the Brighton, Colorado Art Guild.  I wanted to show them some steps that I use to paint Aspen trees and didn't want to have them watch paint dry...  As a result I have two very similar paintings.  Colorado Aspen Grove
(watercolor: 14" x 9") is for sale at the    Grand Lake Art Gallery.

Autumn: plein air Rockies, part 16

This is a plein air oil painting I painted last week in Rocky Mountain National  Park, Colorado.  The Aspen are about  at their peak now and are breathtaking.  This spot is near Hidden Valley, looking north, in the morning.  Below is the  photo I took as I painted.  My goal was to capture the feel; an impressionistic take on the subject.
This painting is for sale, please contact me.

Autumn with snow, part 15

Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Trek

Maroon Lake
These two oil paintings are 9" x 12" in matching gold frames with a liner.  They were both inspired by the same trip to the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness area in central Colorado.  The Aspens were at their peak color when a snowstorm dumped 18" of snow.  Seeing the contrast of gold and white was amazing.  For availability, please contact me.

Autumn: Aspens en Plein Air, part 12

Aspen Plein Air 2

Aspen Grove (sold)

Aspen Plein Air (sold)
These paintings have quite a bit in common besides the mountain Aspen Autumn theme.  They are all small original plein air oils painted alla prima in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. I also used primarily a small pallet knife and left lots of oil impasto on the surface of the painting.

Autumn: Colorado commissions, part 11

These two oil paintings are part of a commission of 6 paintings I painted last year. All of the paintings are from the Stove Prairie area. (west of Ft. Collins, CO)  There was a team of 5 artists each painting 6 historical paintings of the area.  The reference photos we had were of present day, so quite a bit of research went into making the artwork.  The 30 finished paintings are mounted in a coffered  ceiling of the library of the clients' new home.  They tell a story, depict the area and even the seasons were coordinated so it looks spectacular. If you would like to see all 6 of my paintings, you can look on my facebook art page. (you don't need to have a facebook account to see it)

Autumn: Aspen tree tops, part 8

"The Sky is the Limit" (pastel/sold)
These are examples of a progression
"Hope" (pastel/sold)
of similar subject matter.  I painted "The Sky is the Limit" first, trying to capture the feeling of looking up at the tree tops. After a few more years of practice with pastels, I painted "Hope" and felt more satisfied with the results. Canvas giclees of "Hope" are available through artforconservation.com Both paintings are inspired by Aspen groves in Autumn.

Autumn Inspirations

I love autumn, Indian summer, crisp air and the colors that come with it.  I find that I paint the majority of my paintings from fall inspirations.  These are two mini oil paintings from near my home.  "Almost Home" (left) is a 7" x 5" oil impasto of an old Cottonwood tree that "shows off" every fall.  "Big Valley Bookcliff" (top) is a 6" x 12" plein air oil painted with a pallet knife with impasto.  You can see the same Cottonwood tree on the far left of this painting.  Both of these paintings are for sale, in matching frames.  Contact me for more information.

Soul Reflections

"Soul Reflections" (oil) sold recently at the Grand Lake Gallery. (Colorado)
This scene is an impasto impression of Bowman Lake in Glacier National Park in Montana.  The reflections were as glass and I desperately wanted a canoe to glide through the surface in the early morning light.  Canvas giclees and prints are available of this image through fineartamerica.com.
