Aspen Lake progressive paintings

Here is another example of "progressive painting."  The painting on the left is a 10" x 10" plein air oil painting of Aspen Lake in northern New Mexico.  (currently for sale at Mt. Living Studio, Manitou Springs, CO)  I used the reference photo from the plein air combined with a photo of some Adirondack chairs to paint "Aspen Lake" in pastel (right).  The last painting in this mini series is "My Space", a 24" x 18" oil.  I saturated the colors more and added a couple of bottles of Grolsch  beer to make the scene even more inviting.  "My Space" is currently for sale through Centennial Galleries. (Ft. Collins, CO)

Stove Prairie School Progression

As part of a large commission I had last year, one of my paintings was to be of the Stove Prairie School (Colorado) when it was first built in 1896.  I didn't have a reference but scoured libraries, the internet, archives and listened to the locals' stories.  I found the photo from1896(top), paid for a copy and signed a release for it's use.  I also took numerous photos of where the school still stands today. (with several additions)  I put these references together and painted a smaller oil version (center) before I started the final oil version(bottom) on birchwood for my client.

Both paintings are sold, but more of my work can be seen online:

"The Clearing"

These paintings are from the CSU campus at Pingree Park in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.  Usually  if I paint a plein air the studio piece follows. In this case I did the opposite. The first one (left, sold) I painted in pastel was done using a reference photo. The plein air piece (right) was painted about a year later in the same place. Some of the trees on the side of the puddle had been cut down plus I have found that plein air paintings can turn out fresher, sometimes lighter.  "The Clearing, plein air" (pastel) on the right is for sale through Centennial galleries currently.
You can  contact me for information.

Plein air Progression

Plein air painting starts with inspiration.  I drove a few miles up the Big Thompson Canyon to a park on the Big Thompson River (Colorado).
After checking out several possibilities, I found a rock near the river to set up my pochade box with oil  paints.  I sketched out the scene with Transparent Oxide Red and blocked in my darkest darks. I worked for a few hours, gradually moving to using my pallet knife almost exclusively to get the heavy impasto feel which I wanted for the rushing river.  The end result: my impression of the river that day and a great feeling of being outside on a gorgeous Colorado summer morning.
This 14" x 11" is for sale, please contact me for more information.

Shell Chairs

"Days Gone By" is one of a few paintings I have done with those 1950's style metal shell chairs.  I love the nostalgic feel they bring me.  After years of casually looking to purchase some, I found one recently at an antique store and a friend of mine found two more later that same week.  I now have the inspiration in my own backyard!
