Equinox

'
I recently had a client that liked my "Last Call" (pastel) painting so much that he commissioned me to paint an oil of the same scene.
The reference I used was from a photo I had taken in late Autumn, right after an early snow. The  snowy pines with  Aspen trees  reflective scene is just outside of Estes Park, Colorado
I created an underpainting using Alizarin Crimson so I could have a warm undertone in the relatively cool landscape.

I painted in my darkest darks & lightest values so I knew what my value range was.

This is how I progressed on this painting. I tweak until I feel like I'm getting what I like.

I decided to let it snow and also added swirls in the water from the falling snow.

Spring Glow

I recently finished painting "Spring Glow", an original oil painting.  I painted this as a demo in my oil painting class when our project theme was 'acrylic under painting'.  When you play with complimentary layered colors, you will get a glow in your paintings.  I was skeptical about putting the yellow under the sky but it worked out better than I had hoped.
I found this scene near Kalispell, Montana in the Flathead Valley.  This scene is of Peter's Ridge.  I spent a cold, rainy day in June but when the sun cleared, the fresh snow on the Swan Mountains and the end of day sunlit  pine trees inspired me. "Spring Glow" is available for purchase.

Scenes of Loveland at the Lincoln Gallery

Pallet Knife Poppies
This month at the Lincoln Gallery I'm showing some local scenes from Loveland.  "Pallet Knife Poppies" is a 20" x 16" oil with lots of impasto pallet knife painting in the orange poppies.  This was inspired by a scene on the West side of Loveland with Longs Peak and the Colorado Front Range receding in the distance.
Oasis
"Oasis" is a 12" x 9" plein air oil painting of the Devil's Backbone park just outside of Loveland, Colorado.  This is a favorite hiking trail in Larimer County. The park is normally desert-like but in Spring the Cottonwood trees were showing off  their green. I had fun carving paint with my pallet knife as a result this painting has lots of impasto.
Stillness
I painted this 9" x 12"  original oil painting en plein air very early in the morning at Rivers Edge Natural area in Loveland, Colorado.  The water was perfectly reflective and caught my eye. This is a popular city park with lots to offer.

January 2017 newsletter

Every few months, I  send out an email of my latest art, shows and classes.  Here is the latest one.

This is an example of what I teach in my (solvent) free oil painting classes.  I taught my students how to look at composition and value first, then paint with  thinned transparent oxide red oil paint for an underpainting.  Below is the finished piece.  The inspiration was a view from Hungry Horse Reservoir in Montana.

All Colorado Artists Show

I am pleased to announce that both of these original oil paintings were accepted in the "All Colorado Artists Show" at Mainstreet Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado.  Both paintings are landscapes of the Colorado Rockies.  'Daybreak' was finished with a pallet knife with lots of impasto.  The scene is from Mueller State Park which is just West of Pikes Peak.  The leaves of Autumn were just beginning to change color.  I loved the way the early morning light was illuminating the Aspen trees.   I first painted this scene en plein air.  Always liking the scene, I decided to recreate it in a studio piece.
Daybreak
"Serenity" is an oil painting inspired by the high alpine lake, The Loch which is a beautiful hike in Rocky Mountain National Park.  I've painted the Loch several times and still am inspired by the pristine landscape.

Calming

I painted "Calming", a 16 x 16" original oil of a clear stream in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, in my Oil Painting Class this past Spring of 2016.  I worked on the painting almost exclusively in front of my students during class.  Our theme was 'running water' and  I had each student pick an image they wanted to paint.  We started with an underpainting which is in essense the drawing under the painting.  The next step is to nail those darks as it's easy to loose them in oil painting.  I slowly added the local color and tweaked until I felt it was finished.  This painting sat on my easel almost done for a couple of weeks.  This helped me review what was needed.  "Calming" is currently  available, but contact me to find out the current status.
I am starting up my Solvent Free Oil Painting class September 15.  We meet from 9-12AM on Thursdays.  My classes are small at  6-7 students and I  have an opening.
Stage 1; Underpainting drawing

Stage 2; getting those darks in

Stage 3: on my easel progression

Lines Into Shapes 2015

Serenity

My oil painting "Serenity" was accepted into the 2015 National show "Lines Into Shapes" held at the Art Center of  Estes Park Gallery.  The opening is October 30, 2015 from 5-7pm and runs for two weeks.  This original oil  painting is inspired by one of my favorite hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.  The Loch is a peaceful alpine lake  surrounded by mountain peaks and climbs to over two miles above sea level. I've painted scenes from this hike many times.

Both of these paintings were from a gorgeous Fall hike in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

Oil Painting classes

Moose Camp oil

Rocky View oil

Blushing oil
I teach weekly oil painting classes out of my home studio on Thursday mornings.   My classes are small with a limit of 6 students so everyone gets plenty of individual attention.  My goal as an art instructor is to teach you the basics of painting and how to paint your vision.   These are some examples of paintings that I demoed and painted in class last Spring and Winter.
"Moose Camp" was a lesson in learning how to paint objects that had some sentimental value to each student and compose a painting.  We started with painting with just one monochromatic value (Transparent Earth Red by Gamblin) to get our drawings realistic at first.  After these were completed we added a thin layer of paint and kept the realism as the style of for this project.
The lesson when I painted "Rocky View" in class was how to create depth in a landscape.  We played with just foreground and background I taught them how to exaggerate atmosphere by graying down the cool colors of the background.  I taught them in the final layer how to use a pallet knife and leave plenty of impasto.
"Blushing" was painted realistically with a monochromatic underpainting.  I kept the background a cool grayish blue to accent the pinks & greens of the rose. With this project I taught how to draw what you see, values, how to use complimentary colors and grays to accent the focal point.
For more information about joining this group, you can contact me by clicking on the link.

Sweet Art Show

Retreat
I recently rejoined the Lincoln Gallery in Loveland, Colorado.  This co-op gallery is run by the Thompson Valley Art League.  Every February they sponsor a members show called the Sweet Art show.  (Valentine's Day is a big deal in Loveland every year.) I entered two oils and "Retreat" won 2nd place for oils.  I love this scene of an Adirondack chair sitting beside a peaceful alpine lake with  the rugged Rocky Mountain peaks surrounding it.  I found this scene near Fernie, British  Columbia at Island Lake Lodge.  I added the red glass of wine to make it that much more inviting.  This original oil is for sale, contact me for current availability.

A possible companion piece for "Retreat" is "Recharge" which is a larger (24" x 30") original oil painting with two Adirondack chairs with two wine glasses and a bottle of wine.  "Recharge" is more impressionistic with some impasto.  Both paintings give me peace of mind

Western Spirit Art Show 2015

Homespun
My original oil "Homespun" was accepted into the Western Spirit Art Show in Cheyenne, Wyoming with an opening on March 7, 2015.  I painted this oil plein air in my backyard last summer.  I was participating in Plein Air Rockies which had a 50 mile radius of Estes Park.  My backyard is well within the parameters so I set up a favorite homemade log cabin quilt on the clothesline and captured the late afternoon light of the Front Range in Colorado.

Shades of Spring
The other two mini oils of mine in this national show are "Shades of Spring" and "Perch".   "Shades of Spring" is a pallet knife plein air oil painting from last Spring when the lilacs were just blooming.  This painting has a fair amount of texture in the impasto swirls.

"Perch" is also a plein air original oil I painted while participating in Paint the Poudre Plein Air 2014.  I set up my pochade box on a hilltop above Horsetooth Reservoir and captured a gray, but atmospheric day in Northern Colorado.
