Figurative drawing

This beautiful young woman is a newer model to the weekly portrait and drawing group that I attend.  She has beautiful long red hair-which made it hard to work in black & white-and not use paint.  Currently I am enjoying drawing so I can focus on the value and form. These drawings were done alla prima. (one session)

Romantic nude couples

These drawings were all drawn alla prima; one 3 hour session each.  In the weekly uninstructed life drawing/painting group that I belong to, we occasionally have two models as a treat.  I find my drawing evening with friends/like minded souls is a day I look forward to.  Life drawing isn't easy, but a challenge I love.  I admire the models who can slip right back into a pose, even if it is uncomfortable.

Wild Man

"Wild Man"
I painted "Wild Man" in a 3 hour session in January 2012. I like the  intuitive loose brushstrokes I achieved .  This is an 14" x 11" original oil painting painted alla prima.

Romantic Paintings

Into the Sunset (n/a)
Soul Mates (n/a)

The Proposal (n/a)
These three paintings were done for some very romantic couples.  The top sunset painting (oil) was in Aruba.  The couple had their picture taken walking into the sunset along the beach.  She didn't know he was going to propose.   "Soul Mates" is an oil I completed for my son and his new wife for their wedding.   We were on a hike in Colorado together when I took the reference photo.  The bottom painting, "The Proposal" (pastel) was the most difficult.  He wanted to recreate his romantic marriage proposal of them in New York City's Central Park.  I had bits and pieces of information to go by but no good reference photo.  This painting was given by the groom to the bride the night before their wedding.

Monochromatic Nude Oils

Jubilant
Earth
Intent: Steve
Ashley Rae
Carrie
These monochromatic oil paintings were all done using Transparent Oxide Red with maybe a touch of Sap Green added in the last nude modeling session.  The paintings were done alla prima in a 3 hour session using both female and male nudes.  I find that when I paint with just one color or two I get back in touch with value and start seeing the light and shadow more clearly.  To find out if a painting is available (they were at the date of this post) you can contact me and we can set it up with pay pal.

"Corsair Wench"

"Corsair Wench"
I admit, I had to google the name of a pirate's girlfriend and this is what I came up with.  Allie posed for our weekly figure and  portrait drawing and painting group. I didn't get to finish the pastel, but I rather like the unfinished look.  The focus is the pirate hat and expression.  This pastel drawing on canson pastel paper is available for purchase.

Tarena

Egyptian goddess (pastel)

Fallen (pastel)

Tarena of Athens (oil)

Beauty (oil)

Dangerous (charcoal)

Ready for Burning Man

Tarena (pastel)

Over the last four years of weekly painting or drawing models in costumed or nude poses, I've definitely had some favorite models.   Tarena is one of them.  These are some of the paintings and drawings I've done from her very creative costumes.  She also is excellent at getting back into a pose perfectly and sits still.  All of these were done alla prima (one session) except for Tarena of Athens in which she posed for us two sessions in a row. To find out if a piece is still for sale, contact me.

Another era: portraits of SCA members

I attend a weekly portrait and figure drawing/painting session.  Here are a couple of pastel portrait sketches I painted each in a 3 hour session.  These models are members of the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) and wore their authentic time period clothing (pre 17th century European) which were amazing.
These originals are for sale, for more information, please contact me.

A Portrait of my Parents

I painted "Lasting Love"; a portrait of my parents with soft pastels.  They were happily married for 50+ years, a rarity these days.  They were sitting on a bench at Lake Loveland (Loveland, Colorado) with Longs Peak in the distance.  Although I would never part with this painting, I do have prints available at fineartamerica.com.

Kitten Love

"Kitten Love" is a watercolor portrait I painted of when my daughter was young with her new kitten.  I did win an award for this painting in a local show but it's a keepsake I can't sell.
I am open to do commissions for others who would like to have their moment in time captured in a painting.

Oil Portrait Study

I attended an oil painting portrait class last week with George Coll.  This is my 3 hour alla prima (painted in one session) portrait I painted.  This is a whole new way of approaching portrait painting for me; from the inside out with fairly thick paint. Great inspiration/model and an awesome instructor!
