Romantic Paintings

Into the Sunset (n/a)
Soul Mates (n/a)

The Proposal (n/a)
These three paintings were done for some very romantic couples.  The top sunset painting (oil) was in Aruba.  The couple had their picture taken walking into the sunset along the beach.  She didn't know he was going to propose.   "Soul Mates" is an oil I completed for my son and his new wife for their wedding.   We were on a hike in Colorado together when I took the reference photo.  The bottom painting, "The Proposal" (pastel) was the most difficult.  He wanted to recreate his romantic marriage proposal of them in New York City's Central Park.  I had bits and pieces of information to go by but no good reference photo.  This painting was given by the groom to the bride the night before their wedding.

Monochromatic Nude Oils

Jubilant
Earth
Intent: Steve
Ashley Rae
Carrie
These monochromatic oil paintings were all done using Transparent Oxide Red with maybe a touch of Sap Green added in the last nude modeling session.  The paintings were done alla prima in a 3 hour session using both female and male nudes.  I find that when I paint with just one color or two I get back in touch with value and start seeing the light and shadow more clearly.  To find out if a painting is available (they were at the date of this post) you can contact me and we can set it up with pay pal.

Ashley Rae

Ashley Rae is another professional model that I enjoy to paint and draw.   She usually poses in the nude for our weekly group.   She is awesome at getting right back into the perfect pose each time.  She is truly long and lovely.  These are some  charcoal and pastel drawings (the second is a monochromatic oil) I have done of her over the years.  All images were done alla prima in one 3 hour session.

"Corsair Wench"

"Corsair Wench"
I admit, I had to google the name of a pirate's girlfriend and this is what I came up with.  Allie posed for our weekly figure and  portrait drawing and painting group. I didn't get to finish the pastel, but I rather like the unfinished look.  The focus is the pirate hat and expression.  This pastel drawing on canson pastel paper is available for purchase.

Steve: Male nude model

Steve: oil

Steve: charcoal pencil
I also paint & draw male models.   Steve  is another excellent model who posed nude. He has a serious gaze which I felt I captured in these images.  The top piece is a monochromatic oil painting. I used only Transparent Oxide Red with maybe just a touch of Viridian in the last session.  Although I love color it's good to force yourself to paint using just value. Both images were created alla prima in one 3 hour session.

Classic (nude) back poses

Classic Back Pose
Trish
Earth (it really is her name)
Ashley Rae
I don't know why I'm attracted to paint the nude female back.  I've always admired Ingres: Grand Odalisque and maybe it reminds me of that beautiful classic painting.  The top four paintings were done in oil, the bottom is a pastel.  Sometimes I work on a painting with only one color: Transparent Oxide Red.  Working with just value is a great way to train your eye to see it.   All were done alla prima in a 3 hour session.

Tarena

Egyptian goddess (pastel)

Fallen (pastel)

Tarena of Athens (oil)

Beauty (oil)

Dangerous (charcoal)

Ready for Burning Man

Tarena (pastel)

Over the last four years of weekly painting or drawing models in costumed or nude poses, I've definitely had some favorite models.   Tarena is one of them.  These are some of the paintings and drawings I've done from her very creative costumes.  She also is excellent at getting back into a pose perfectly and sits still.  All of these were done alla prima (one session) except for Tarena of Athens in which she posed for us two sessions in a row. To find out if a piece is still for sale, contact me.

Trish

Trish

Trish:  Nude Back Pose

Trish: Blue eyes
These are a few examples of one of our regular models on my uninstructed painting evenings with artist friends.  We paint costumed models and nudes once a week.   Trish has been an awesome and versitile model for us. The top two nude poses were done in oil. The bottom is pastel.  All three were done alla prima. By painting in one session the painting is fresher and more spontaneous.  These original paintings are for sale, to inquire for current availability, please contact me.

Royalty

Royalty
I painted "Royalty" in a 3 hour long pose (with breaks) in a uninstructed live model painting night.  This 14" x 11" original oil painting has lots of impasto and bold strokes. Our model was costumed to look quite distinguished with just a yellow shear drape that looked like an elegant gown.  This painting is currently for sale, you can contact me for more details.

Rabbit Ears Pass painting

Rabbit Ears Pass
This is another little plein air oil painting (9.5" x 5") I painted in September 2011.  I went with a group of art friends to a beautiful home in North Park, Colorado for a few days of plein air painting.  This scene of Rabbit  Ears Pass (Routt National Forest) was right outside the front door which is among a healthy Aspen grove.  I painted "Rabbit Ears Pass" in morning light and finished it one sitting (alla prima)  This paintings is currently available for sale.  Please contact me for details.

Summit Lake

Summit Lake
This is one of several plein air oil paintings I painted this fall.  "Summit Lake" is on the the top of Buffalo Pass in Routt National Forest near Steamboat Springs, Colorado.  The alpine lake was calm, the forest quiet and the air pristine. This original oil painting on canvas  is 10" x 6" and is available for purchase. Please contact me for current status.
