Kauai

Heart Breakers

A New Day
These are two brand new oil paintings I recently finished that were inspired by a lovely trip to Kauai, Hawaii, this year.  They both were started and worked on during my oil painting classes.  I used a limited pallet which I believe gives the paintings more cohesion.

I choose my primary colors based on what colors I need for the painting.  I paint a small thumbnail in black and white to get the values and composition nailed down. For 'Heart Breakers' I used my homemade Alizarin Crimson with Pyrrole Red & Quinacridone Violet, Cadmium Yellow Light, Indanthrone & Titanium White.
Next I create an under-painting in oil using my homemade Alizarin to get the values.  If I need to go darker I might add a touch of Sap Green.  On an oil primed linen surface this acts like a white erase board while it's wet.

As I progress I lay the local colors down, starting with the darks. I am careful not to cover up all of the under-painting as I want to leave some of the glimmer that shows through.

These paintings are currently for sale.

Happy 2018!
The holidays are over and isn't it time you do something for yourself?  Do you have some creative energy just aching to get out? Time to treat yourself!
I am offering a variety of art classes that you might be interested in.
  • I offer Wednesday morning ongoing watercolor classes and Thursday morning (solvent free) oil painting.  These classes generally stay full but there are a few openings for the new year.  I charge $30/class based on paying for one month at a time.  My home studio is just 15 minutes west of Loveland .  We continue to explore techniques, subjects and styles in each medium.  My classes are small (7 for watercolor, 6 for oil) so you can easily make like minded friends.  Check out my blog for more details or give me a call/email me.
'Napali Coast Cruise' -a recent oil I painted as a demo in class.
Wine glass painting classes have been a hit! Every class at the Sweetheart winery has sold out!  The next available class scheduled  with availability is February 19th.  Watch the winery's event page for the next class signup.

I have also started to teach glass painting at K9 Wisdom in Loveland.  We painted treat jars in December & will paint wine glasses & treat jars on March 7.
I have also started teaching private wine glass painting classes for those of you who want a more personal experience.  For $40/person (minimum of 4 at my studio, 6 at your home)  I will supply 2 large wine glasses, supplies & instruction for each guest. You choose the designs that I demo & bring wine for if your friends (optional).   If you are interested in joining one of my classes, email me.

Treat jars painted at K9 wisdom by students with limited or no experience!  The method I've come up with is easy!

Hope to see you in 2018-                                Mary Giacomini

"Rocky View" was painted during a class as I demonstrated how to create depth in a landscape.
I currently have an opening in my Thursday morning oil painting class.  I teach out of my studio West of Loveland, Colorado.  All levels are welcome, including those with no experience.  I keep my classes small (6 students) so everyone has plenty of attention.  We cover a wide range of subjects and painting styles to help you find your own 'style'.  If you are interested or have questions, please feel free to contact me.

Rose paintings

Peaceful Pair

Blushing
Here are a couple of realistic rose oil paintings I've completed.  Both of these were started as class demos for my oil painting class.  I started with an under-painting to get the value and drawing correct then added the local color.  These original oil paintings are currently available for purchase.

Ongoing adult oil & watercolor classes

"Retreat"
I teach two different weekly adult art classes out of my Loveland, Colorado art studio.
On Wednesdays I teach beginning to intermediate watercolor.  We often experiment with a new technique or study at the start of the class then everyone has their own project that I help them progress on. I take student input for class ideas and fit their requests into the schedule.
Thursday is my oil painting class day.   I teach my students a new color study and/or technique then I encourage them to paint what they have passion for.   I want my students to be able to paint what they want; not to copy what I do.  I teach them independence. I teach technique, value and color mixing.  I want my students to be challenged but not overwhelmed.  I will take up to 5 students in each class so everyone gets plenty of individual attention.  I plan to start teaching weekly class on Oct 8 for watercolor and Oct 9 (2014) for oil.
I plan on continuing both classes weekly through May 2014, then will take the summertime to offer workshops and plein air paint.   If you are interested in attending, contact me

Peaceful Pair

8" x 10" oil

Under painting for the above roses
I painted "Peaceful Pair" twice this year.   A friend and fellow artist, Billie Colson was holding her annual fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis and looking for a variety of rose paintings to be donated and sold to benefit this organization.  I taught my home studio watercolor students how to do a purple underpainting with transparent watercolors.  They could choose my reference or one of their own.  The bottom painting was my donation (sold) at '65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis' for 2014.
My home studio oil painting students were interested in learning how to paint roses in oil as well. I used the same reference but used Transparent Oxide (oil) Red to get the drawing and values in before I laid a layer of oil on top.  The top two paintings are one in the same, the middle image is the under painting for the "Peaceful Pair" 8" x 10" oil painting on top.  Quite a few of my students donated one or more of their roses paintings, and several sold.  I'm so proud of them!
