Oil painting class opening

I have an oil painting spot open in my home studio class on Thursday afternoons!  I teach 6 students weekly and rarely have an opening.  I would prefer someone with some experience but is willing to keep learning.  We meet 1-4pm most Thursdays in west Loveland, Colorado.

The above picture is an example of one of the many things I teach: underpainting.  This oil painting isn't finished but it gives you the idea of what an underpainting does.  By painting monochromatically with a transparent paint you figure out the drawing and values then apply oil paint. This way you have a more accurate image.  I was painting this clay sculpture as a still life.  This month we're painting animals or birds.

I earned a BFA in Fine Art many years ago but continue to learn more about all the aspects of painting.  If you are interested in learning to increase your painting skills, please contact me before the spot fills! I paint somewhere between realistic and impressionistic and we have themes in our classes which are student led.

Newsletter Summer 2019

Hello!
I hope you are enjoying your summer!  I'm getting my 'troops' lined up for Fall and wanted to see if you're interested in joining. I'm quite honored that the majority of last Spring's students are returning.
     I am  teaching a
beginning-intermediate  oil painting class on Thursday afternoons from 2-5pm on Sept 19  and 26 that will continue each month.  I have one spot open. Learn how to paint without the nasty petroleum solvents but using traditional oils.  The cost is $70 for 2 classes or $35/class based on paying for a month at a time.   I do sometimes have drop in spots available for some of the classes.
This weekend is Loveland's big art weekend!  I am participating in Art in the Park  Saturday and Sunday.  Besides volunteering, I am sharing a booth with other Thompson Valley Art League Members.  I have framed originals  a bin full of originals and a few prints.
I made the Reporter Herald for an article about the 4th Street Gallery Experience last monthThis has been a fun opportunity to show my work with 6 her professional artists.
Flathead Valley oil

Finally, I am participating in the Estes Valley Plein Air 2019. Check the website for special events.  The final show is on Aug 24 at the Art Center of Estes Park.  All are invited!  I'm looking forward to painting in Rocky Mountain National Park painting the inspiring views.
Enjoy the rest of summer!

Solvent free oil painting classes

In my Thursday morning oil painting classes (Loveland, Colorado) I cover a variety of material.  In this project we were studying clouds.  We started with a simple black and white value scale and painted a gray monochromatic thumbnail proportional to the canvas we planned on painting.

Learning about composition, value & underpainting
In my classes we play with different subject matter, techniques and color theory/experiments.  My goal is to teach you how to paint on your own.  We use traditional oil paints but do not use the dangerous or even odorless solvents as I find they are just as toxic as the rest.  I will teach you to safely paint without the use of them.  I currently have one opening in my class that has a maximum of 6 students.  Contact me for more information.

Oil Painting Classes

"Rocky View" was painted during a class as I demonstrated how to create depth in a landscape.
I currently have an opening in my Thursday morning oil painting class.  I teach out of my studio West of Loveland, Colorado.  All levels are welcome, including those with no experience.  I keep my classes small (6 students) so everyone has plenty of attention.  We cover a wide range of subjects and painting styles to help you find your own 'style'.  If you are interested or have questions, please feel free to contact me.

Home studio art classes: Watercolor

Starting in October, I'm once again teaching an Adult watercolor class.  This class is intended for beginners to intermediate students.  No experience is necessary.  We meet on Wednesday mornings from 9-12 starting early October 7, 2015 in Loveland, Colorado.  I currently have one opening with a maximum of 6 students per class.  We learn all kinds of new things during the year:  color experiments, playing, drawing lessons, value, composition, textures, types of paper, cropping, critique, themes, glazing, wet on wet, purple underpainting and the list goes on.  My goal is to teach you to achieve your goal of painting what you want to.   For more information, contact me.
"Shades of Gray"
In this class we used an Ansel Adams photo to inspire us to use only one dark color to achieve distance.

We had a fresh bouquet of flowers in this class and splashed fresh watercolor quickly.

Layered hydrangea
We used stencils and a limited pallet to 'layer' this hydrangea to life.

Tropical Escape
We used lots of tropical pure colors for our sunset & added dark purple palm trees and a beach.

Loose Moose

Loose Moose
I have a love of pallet knife painting.  When my oil painting class requested a lesson on 'Van Gogh animals" I jumped to the task as I love his loose, swirling strokes.  When I start a painting I know will have very heavy impasto, I start with a good drawing and don't add the thick paint until I have a color theme and good composition in place.  When I'm ready to lay on the swirls of paint with a pallet knife, I get brave and ad more brilliant colors that the reference photo portrays.  I do ad up to a 50% dilution of either Gamblin's Solvent Free Gel or Resingel to my oil paint to speed up the drying time.  "" is 12" x 16", oil on linen.  Contact me for current availabilty.

Vincent Van Moose
I painted 'Vincent Van Moose' in 2014 in a similar style.  This painting sold the day I posted it on the internet.

Peaceful Pair

8" x 10" oil

Under painting for the above roses
I painted "Peaceful Pair" twice this year.   A friend and fellow artist, Billie Colson was holding her annual fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis and looking for a variety of rose paintings to be donated and sold to benefit this organization.  I taught my home studio watercolor students how to do a purple underpainting with transparent watercolors.  They could choose my reference or one of their own.  The bottom painting was my donation (sold) at '65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis' for 2014.
My home studio oil painting students were interested in learning how to paint roses in oil as well. I used the same reference but used Transparent Oxide (oil) Red to get the drawing and values in before I laid a layer of oil on top.  The top two paintings are one in the same, the middle image is the under painting for the "Peaceful Pair" 8" x 10" oil painting on top.  Quite a few of my students donated one or more of their roses paintings, and several sold.  I'm so proud of them!
