Impressions of Life, Love & Passion: a show of Art for Valentine's Day

I am participating in the  Cultural Arts Council of Estes Park's (Colorado) February (2016) art show "Impressions of Life, Love & Passion" this month.  I brought in a variety of original art that fit this theme.  "Love is in the Air" is a little mixed piece piece taking off on Lake Loveland & Valentine's day.  Every year Loveland celebrates Valentine's Day just a little more & has become quite the fun, loving event.  "Recharge" is a large oil with impasto of two Adirondack chairs with a bottle of red wine & two wine glasses in front of a perfect view of the mountains.
Love is in the Air (mixed media)

Recharge (oil) 24 x 30"
I included "Escape" and "The Trumpet", two figures painted from life because they both depict a passion:  reading, enjoying the beach and playing the trumpet.
Escape (oil)

What can be more of a gift of love than a painting of 'friendship' yellow roses?

Reserved: the process

Reserved 30" x 30" oil/sold
I recently finished "Reserved".   I worked on this oil painting commission for many months.  My client had an idea for a painting that she wanted for above her fireplace. She really like my painting "Recharge" but decided to commission me to paint  an original oil of exactly what she had in mind.
She provided a good reference for Longs Peak (taken from the Peak to Peak Highway in Colorado adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park) but wanted to include the Adirondack chairs that I have painted frequently.  I composed the two chairs with the Longs Peak Autumn photo and painted the small "Table for Two".  I included the bottle of red wine and two  wine glasses to make the painting that much more inviting.  I wanted to make sure I was portraying what she had in mind before I went to the actual large square format.  She loved the small painting so I started "Reserved" on oil primed linen on gator-board (my favorite surface for oil).  I was pleased with the outcome of the painting and more importantly my client absolutely loved it.
"Table for Two" sold recently at the Grand Lake Art Gallery.     "Recharge" is still available for purchase.  To inquire about current availability, contact me.  Fine art prints and giclees of  "Reserved" can be ordered through Fine Art America.

Sweet Art Show

Retreat
I recently rejoined the Lincoln Gallery in Loveland, Colorado.  This co-op gallery is run by the Thompson Valley Art League.  Every February they sponsor a members show called the Sweet Art show.  (Valentine's Day is a big deal in Loveland every year.) I entered two oils and "Retreat" won 2nd place for oils.  I love this scene of an Adirondack chair sitting beside a peaceful alpine lake with  the rugged Rocky Mountain peaks surrounding it.  I found this scene near Fernie, British  Columbia at Island Lake Lodge.  I added the red glass of wine to make it that much more inviting.  This original oil is for sale, contact me for current availability.

A possible companion piece for "Retreat" is "Recharge" which is a larger (24" x 30") original oil painting with two Adirondack chairs with two wine glasses and a bottle of wine.  "Recharge" is more impressionistic with some impasto.  Both paintings give me peace of mind

Ongoing adult oil & watercolor classes

"Retreat"
I teach two different weekly adult art classes out of my Loveland, Colorado art studio.
On Wednesdays I teach beginning to intermediate watercolor.  We often experiment with a new technique or study at the start of the class then everyone has their own project that I help them progress on. I take student input for class ideas and fit their requests into the schedule.
Thursday is my oil painting class day.   I teach my students a new color study and/or technique then I encourage them to paint what they have passion for.   I want my students to be able to paint what they want; not to copy what I do.  I teach them independence. I teach technique, value and color mixing.  I want my students to be challenged but not overwhelmed.  I will take up to 5 students in each class so everyone gets plenty of individual attention.  I plan to start teaching weekly class on Oct 8 for watercolor and Oct 9 (2014) for oil.
I plan on continuing both classes weekly through May 2014, then will take the summertime to offer workshops and plein air paint.   If you are interested in attending, contact me

New Chair paintings for sale

"Recharge"  oil   24" x 30"

"Retreat"  oil  18" x 14"

Oil  10" x 10"
I have recently completed several new paintings in my chair series.  Each serene setting has a glass of red wine for your enjoyment with a view of the Rocky Mountains.  These are all original oil paintings that are currently available for purchase.  "Recharge" and "Retreat" are views of the Canadian Rockies.  "Recharge" has a fair amount of impasto and pallet knife work.  The bottom painting that I just finished is a small study for a large commission I will be working on shortly.  My client loved the chairs of  "Recharge" but wanted the familiar Longs Peak in the background. This scene of Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado is off of Highway 7; the Peak to Peak Highway.   I will use this painting to enlarge it to 30" x 30".  For prices and availability please contact me.

Sol

"Sol" oil (sold)
I finished this 24" x 36" oil painting recently.  I was inspired by a scene I encountered on Flathead Lake, near Kalispell, Montana.  I've always loved and have painted a series of Adirondack chairs but this one was the most colorful version I've seen yet.  I was attracted to the rainbow of colors, especially in the water.  The original photo had a "Corona" box which I took artistic license and created my own label: "Down Dog Ale".  This painting was sold before the paint was dry to dear friends who loved it.   A variety of high quality prints can be ordered through Fine Art America.

Ellie's Chair

Ellie's Chair
I recently had some old slides converted into digital images.  One of my "long lost" images is of this watercolor, "Ellie's Chair".  I started and completed most of it en plein air.  This image is important to me as it's the first in my quite large series of chair paintings.

Aspen Lake progressive paintings

Here is another example of "progressive painting."  The painting on the left is a 10" x 10" plein air oil painting of Aspen Lake in northern New Mexico.  (currently for sale at Mt. Living Studio, Manitou Springs, CO)  I used the reference photo from the plein air combined with a photo of some Adirondack chairs to paint "Aspen Lake" in pastel (right).  The last painting in this mini series is "My Space", a 24" x 18" oil.  I saturated the colors more and added a couple of bottles of Grolsch  beer to make the scene even more inviting.  "My Space" is currently for sale through Centennial Galleries. (Ft. Collins, CO)

In Good Company

"In Good Company" is a 15" x 10.75" watercolor from  4 Mile Bed & Breakfast just outside of  Glennwood Springs, Colorado.  I stayed there last summer, in this log cabin and had a lovely glass of wine in the green chair on this rustic front porch.   I've done a series of chairs over the years as I find them inviting.  This painting is for sale,  for $395 (includes frame & matting) plus $25 shipping.
