Island Lake

Island Lake

"Island Lake" is one of the most beautiful places on the planet.  I stumbled upon this  lodge and Provencal Park near Fernie, British Columbia Canada last summer. While I hiked in old growth forests around this quiet mountain lake,  I was constantly taking reference pictures as I was inspired the entire time.  I want to return and stay longer.

Climate Change Reversed

"Fresh"

My painting "Fresh" won 1st place in the Fine Art America contest "Climate Change Reversed."  I started this oil painting as a plein air in my back yard.  I then brought it back in the studio for a bit of tweaking.  This painting is currently for sale at Mountain Living Studio in Manitou Springs, Colorado.

Pastels on 5th; sidewalk art pictures

I participated in "Pastels on 5th" on September 10, 2011.  The one day event raised $10,000 for Alternatives to Violence.  60 artists united and painted sidewalk art for sponsors who donated to the event.  More pictures can be seen at

Pastels on 5th

Tomorrow morning I will be painting a 4' square of sidewalk  with pastels for the art event: "Pastels on 5th" in downtown Loveland, Colorado.  The event is raising money for Alternatives to Violence and has 50 artists with sponsors on board.  Art of the Rockies is a beautiful downtown gallery and frame shop that is sponsoring me.  The event is free and open to the public.  There will be food, music and drinks available as well as a children's area.  Come and see why Loveland, Colorado is an artsy city!

After a tour of the Museum’s Chuck Close exhibit, learn how to draw a face realistically with a tight grid. Bring a black and white photo portrait (8 x 10) of yourself or someone you want to draw.

Learn how and why the Impressionists painted by recreating one of Monet's haystacks with acrylic paint on canvas.

My submission this year for the Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction September 4, 2011 is "Estes Plein Air".  I painted this plein air oil painting on a beautiful morning in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.  I enjoyed using a pallet knife exclusively to capture the moment.  This painting is for sale in the silent auction.

Transformer Project: FINISHED!

I found out this "barn" was actually a housing for the stone fort and was used  to store hay

The panoramic image of Fort Namaqua also has a panoramic top with the tops of Cottonwood trees linking each side together

I FINISHED painting the Transformer box today.  The project is part of Art in Public Places .  This was a juried & contract project through the City of Loveland.  I started painting the 45" x 75" metal box 3 weeks ago. I have spent most mornings there and paint until  the heat is too intense. I spent 25+ hours just planning the project.  This year's theme was "Historical Loveland".  Since I have done several historically based commissions, I was intrigued by this opportunity and decided to depict Mariano Medina's settlement.

Here are some of the figures I've incorporated into my 45" x 75" transformer box: "Fort Namaqua".  They were the trickiest to do since I have been working on 90 degrees days on a metal box that also gives off heat (if you can imagine that).  The acrylic dries as soon as it hits the surface.

Fort Namaqua:

Mariano Medina built a toll bridge over the Big Thompson River (Loveland, Colorado) in 1858.  The route was on the  Overland Trail which connected with the Oregon Trail. He charged as much as $1 per crossing- and most pioneers paid it vs. taking the risk of crossing the river.
