Mile High National

Creative Capitol

"The Loch" is in the basement rotunda

Untraditional Landscapes

Let your imagination run wild like the watercolor flows. Learn to let go. After we briefly check out the Wayne Thiebaud exhibition at the Museum, we will head back to The Sequel to draw, then paint a landscape using your imagination, inspiration and memories to complete a unique and personal expression. We will use watercolor, then watercolor pencil and/or black markers to accent the painting. All materials will be provided. Description

Learn how to improve your composition by playing with food – the Wayne Theibaud Way. Why not have fun while you paint? Isn’t that what it’s all about anyway? We will check out the Museum’s current exhibition of Wayne Thiebaud’s art to get inspired and then head over to The Sequel to compose our own individual creations with watercolor. We will have some sweet treats to play around with, sketch and paint with watercolor.

Mary Giacomini has always known she wanted to be an artist. In fact, “I’ve always been an artist,” she says, “it’s getting the bravery to call yourself one” that is the hard part.

Giacomini is this month’s featured artist at The Great Frame Up in the Promenade Shops at Centerra, 5943 Sky Pond Drive, E130 in Loveland. The show opened up on Friday, April 3, and will be up throughout the month of April. The work featured will be some in her chair series: “The Chair Show: Places to be Peaceful.” The Chair Show will highlight artwork of chairs in different places.

“Comfy places to hang out,” is what Giacomini says of her inspiration for her chair show. Each of the paintings represent places where Giacomini has found herself comfortable and comforted. “My backyard” is one, she says of her home west of Loveland. Other places in the chair show include locations in Glenwood Springs and Allens Park.

Giacomini grew up in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1983. Since then she and her husband have had three children, two now grown and one still a teenager. After her children got older, Giacomini was able to take her artwork more seriously. She has become very involved in the local art community and she says that she appreciates the arts and the local events in Loveland and Berthoud. Seeing artists celebrated outside of Denver helps her to appreciate her own town.

Giacomini has lived throughout the Loveland and Fort Collins areas for 16 years and still appreciates the area for its small-town feel. She grew up near the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and so Loveland still feels small to her. The closely-knit feel of the community has inspired her to become involved with her local art community.

For example, last year Giacomini submitted a design to be displayed as part of Loveland’s “City with a Heart” program. The program puts up public displays of art, all of them individual artists’ representations of Colorado and the Loveland area on large, three-dimensional hearts. Giacomini’s piece is at 29th Street and Taft Avenue, and features many of the symbols and landmarks that make Loveland a part of Colorado.

For her featured show at The Great Frame Up, Giacomini chose about a dozen pieces of chair art to be displayed. When asked about her art and how long she takes to finish an individual piece, Giacomini laughs softly. “It takes all your life,” she says. Art flows with time and every piece is different. A piece can always be changed and transformed.

With change the only constant, perhaps a visit to Giacomini’s chair show can bring reminders of comfy places you have gone to sit in the past.

The Chair Show

Friday, April 3 from 6-8pm will be the opening of "The Chair Show: Places to be Peaceful" at the Great Frame Up in the Promenade Shops at Centerra in Loveland, Colorado. I'm bringing some of my favorite chair paintings (my most popular series) together for the first time plus some miniature originals of Loveland. I will be the featured artist for the month of April 2009.

Eclectic Art Club

Eclectic Art Club - with Mary Giacomini
Paint a decorative birdhouse with acrylic paint, design a glow in the dark picture using sticky mylar, create a sand painting and experiment with watercolor dye and paper. Learn some basic principles of art disguised by using unique materials and having fun in the process. Each week we will be a different project. Wear old clothes since some of the mediums are staining. All abilities welcome. A $10 supply fee (for 4 classes) is payable to the instructor at the first class. National Show

I am proud to announce that "Tranquility" was accepted into the Art Association of Northern Colorado's 18th annual National Art Show at the Lincoln Center in Ft. Collins, Colorado. The artists reception is on Friday, April 10, 2009 from 5-8pm. Awards are at 6pm.
It's fun, it's free and there is plenty of gorgeous artwork.

March 28th & 29th, 9:00am- 4:00pm
Class Description:
Come and paint the Rocky Mountain Landscape with pastels. In this class you’ll learn the basics of pastel painting and a few techniques that I’ve found to be very useful. Learn how to compose a successful painting, use under painting to give you artwork shimmer and different applications of pastels. You’ll see how using sanded paper makes a huge difference in your pastel painting. Since every student is at
their own level I will give individual attention after a demonstration of the techniques
you will learn. Part of attending this class is learning from each other. At the end of
the painting sessions I would like to have a “sharing session” to share with the class
what you’ve been working on. The goal is to have at least one finished painting at
the end of this workshop.

Required Supplies to bring:
Soft pastels; with a good range of values and colors; I suggest a range of grays, darks & light
colors. Several sheets of sanded paper (kitty wallis white works great) 9”x12” or larger.
Foamboard and masking tape (to attach your paper to)
Old bristle brush
Easel and floor covering (a large old sheet works well)
Wet wipes
