Newsletter Summer 2019

Hello!     I hope you are enjoying your summer!  I'm getting my 'troops' lined up for Fall and wanted to see if you're interested in joining. I'm quite honored that the majority of last Spring's students are returning.      I am  teaching a beginning-intermediate  oil painting class on Thursday afternoons from 2-5pm on Sept 19  and 26 that will continue each month.  I have one spot open. Learn how to paint without the nasty petroleum solvents but using traditional oils.  The cost is $70 for 2 classes or $35/class based on paying for a month at a time.   I do sometimes have drop in spots available for some of the classes. This weekend is Loveland's big art weekend!  I am participating in Art in the Park  Saturday and Sunday.  Besides volunteering, I am sharing a booth with other Thompson Valley Art League Members.  I have framed originals  a bin full of originals and a few prints. I made the Reporter Herald for an article about the 4th Street Gallery Experience last month.  This has been a fun opportunity to show my work with 6 her professional artists.    Flathead Valley oil  Finally, I am participating in the Estes Valley Plein Air 2019. Check the website for special events.  The final show is on Aug 24 at the Art Center of Estes Park.  All are invited!  I'm looking forward to painting in Rocky Mountain National Park painting the inspiring views. Heart Breakers

A New Day

These are two brand new oil paintings I recently finished that were inspired by a lovely trip to Kauai, Hawaii, this year.  They both were started and worked on during my oil painting classes.  I used a limited pallet which I believe gives the paintings more cohesion. 

I choose my primary colors based on what colors I need for the painting.  I paint a small thumbnail in black and white to get the values and composition nailed down. For 'Heart Breakers' I used my homemade Alizarin Crimson with Pyrrole Red & Quinacridone Violet, Cadmium Yellow Light, Indanthrone & Titanium White.

Next I create an under-painting in oil using my homemade Alizarin to get the values.  If I need to go darker I might add a touch of Sap Green.  On an oil primed linen surface this acts like a white erase board while it's wet.
  

 As I progress I lay the local colors down, starting with the darks. I am careful not to cover up all of the under-painting as I want to leave some of the glimmer that shows through.

Art in the Park 2019

Loveland, Colorado's BIG art weekend is almost here!  I'm sharing a booth with other Thompson Valley Art League members from the Lincoln Gallery August 10 & 11, 2019.  I have  framed original oils, watercolor and pastel paintings and lots of bin work for sale. 4th St Gallery Experience

This summer I'm doing something different.  I'm participating with a group of 6 other professional artists from Loveland in a pop up gallery that lasts all summer (through August). Pat Saunders-White, Marc Jones, Shannon Kaye & Sally Hartshorn, Donna Gordon,  Susan Jecminek and myself will be showing our art, offering classes and doing demos.

  The 4th St Gallery is in downtown Loveland, Colorado across the street from the Rialto theatre.  Our business hours are Wed-Sat 11-7 & Sunday 12-4.  We are also open until 9 pm on 2nd Fridays for  Night on the town.
I am offering a wine glass painting class on July 20th from 12-6pm.  Email me for more info. I'll be doing watercolor and oil painting demos on July 11 & 14th.

I started a new solvent free beginning oil painting class on Thursday afternoons from 2-5. I cover color experiments, composition, atmospheric perspective, under painting, different styles, techniques & materials.   I have a few spot available. Lavender Impasto

I had more than a little fun creating this new oil painting.  I was inspired by a Van Gogh workshop taught by Dena Peterson this winter.  I started with Van Gogh thick strokes of paint but turned them into pallet knife swirls.  The oil paint is quite thick with impasto.   I found this scene just outside of Glennwood Springs, Colorado last year and knew I would have to paint it.  I fell in love with the lavender, the view of the Roaring Fork Valley and Mt. Sopris.
This painting was recently accepted into the Lincoln Gallery's 2019 National Show.  The art opening is May 10th from 6-9.

Warm Winter Wishes

Hi there; Wishing you all a healthy, happy & creative new 2019!  Thanks to those of you who visited me at the studio tour.  I am  starting a beginning oil class on Thursday afternoon from 2-5pm on Feb 21, 28 & March 7.  Learn how to paint without the nasty petroleum solvents but using traditional oils.  The cost is $105 for 3 classes & $120 if you'd like me to supply materials for these classes. If I have several students who would like to continue with this, I will.   I have one spot left in my intermediate/advanced  oil class on Thursday mornings.   I would  also be happy to put anyone on the waiting list for my Wed watercolor  class.  The wait list is shrinking!  Classes are $35.  I do sometimes have drop in spots available. "Recharge" made the postcard for the Lincoln Gallery's Champagne & Chocolate celebration/show Feb 8th.  Come & see why Loveland is the best place to celebrate Love for Valentine's. I was asked to jury "Art from the Heart", a Greeley Art Association show open to all.  Check out the show  at the Mari Michener Gallery inside the University of Northern Colorado Michener Library. On February 26th I'm teaching my first class at DIY creations located at the Outlets of Loveland.  Bring a 4" photo of your pet & I'll show you how to easily trace the picture onto a pet treat jar.  Even those with no painting experience are happy with the results.    For those who would like a wine glass party with just your friends, I am booking home parties.  I have a minimum of 6 students.  For $40 you each get 2 custom glasses to paint, materials &  instruction.  If you get 8 or more guests, the hostess is free.  Email  me at art@marygiacomini.com  for more info. Oil Painting Class; without the toxic solvents

I am offering a brand new oil painting class in my studio (just west of Loveland, Colorado) on February 21, 28 & March  7th, 2019.  We will meet from 2-5 PM Thursday afternoons.  I will cover the basics of oil painting, color mixing, underpainting and how to safely use traditional oil paints.
The cost is $105 with your own supplies (given at registration) or $120 all supplies included.  My classes are small (Max 6) so you will get plenty of attention. This is your opportunity to give oil painting a trial run!  If enough students want to continue after the 3 class intro, we will.

Learn about color; get to know your paints and create a cohesive pallet for each painting.

Equinox

 I recently had a client that liked my "Last Call" (pastel) painting so much that he commissioned me to paint an oil of the same scene.

The reference I used was from a photo I had taken in late Autumn, right after an early snow. The  snowy pines with  Aspen trees  reflective scene is just outside of Estes Park, Colorado. 

I created an underpainting using Alizarin Crimson so I could have a warm undertone in the relatively cool landscape.

I painted in my darkest darks & lightest values so I knew what my value range was.

This is how I progressed on this painting. I tweak until I feel like I'm getting what I like.

I decided to let it snow and also added swirls in the water from the falling snow.

Loveland Art Studio Tour 2018

 

It's studio tour time again!  This year I'm setting my artwork up at the Gressiwick 426 N Lincoln Av in Loveland, Colorado.    The talented Marc Jones & I are sharing this space downtown during the #LovelandArtStudioTour   We will be open for a preview Friday, Oct 12 from 6-8PM and Oct 13, 14, 20 & 21 from 11AM-5PM.  I am bringing a large selection of original watercolors, oils, pastels and acrylic paintings.  Stop by!  You can pick up a free book at our location or download one at Loveland Art Studio Tour.
