This is the second year that I am participating in the Alzheimer Association's "Memories in the Making."  Every year they select artists to pick an Alzheimer's patient painting to "pair with" and then the two paintings are sold together at a live auction.  Since I have a love of Adirondack Chairs and the beach, I combined the two in this 12" x 9" original oil painting. The 2014 Memories in the Making of Northern Colorado is in the Fort Collins Hilton on May 20th.  The public is welcome but tickets are required to this event which supports the Alzheimer's Association.

Salon des Refuses

Off the Grid

Some of the local Loveland, Colorado art galleries have decided to create an art show just for the Colorado artists who entered The Colorado Governors Show 2014, but did not get accepted.  The Salon des Refuses was the show in Paris in which galleries showed the art of many of the Impressionists who were rejected in the Paris Salon in 1863.
My watercolor "Off the Grid" is part of Loveland's Salon des Refuses and will be for sale at Lola's Fresh Patina.  The opening is May 8th, 2014 and will coincide with the Governor's Art Show at the Loveland Museum Gallery just a few blocks away.

These three oil paintings and one drawing of mine along with 10 pieces of original figurative bin work will be part of this art show in Fort Collins,  Colorado starting April 4, 2014.  There is a wide variety of talent represented at the Art Association of Northern Colorado's gallery in Old Town.  The opening from 6-9pm coincides with Art Walk downtown.  Many of the artists will be there to meet.  Check it out!

"Lakeview" R.I.P.

In 2008 I submitted a sketch for a brand new program: City with a HeArt in Loveland, Colorado. Large 4.5' X 5' fiberglass heart sculptures were chosen by sponsors and placed in the city.  My design "Lakeview" was chosen by Columbine Health Systems.  
Using Lake Loveland and the surrounding mountains of Longs Peak,  Meeker and the foothills as a reference, I painted all sides of the heart after several coats of priming and sanding.  I researched  acrylic paint for outdoor art and purchased Nova paint with the longest lasting color ratings.  The heart was clear coated with an automobile type of varnish and  it was permanently placed at 29th and Taft Ave in Loveland.  I was pleased at how my colors did not fade or peel despite being outdoors for six years.  On March 19, 2014, a multi-car accident involving a DUI driver destroyed my heart.  I heard that it was broken in several pieces.

I painted the design in reverse on the back side so the design would flow looking from any angle.

Home studio classes

"Crisp" watercolor

I teach two different weekly adult art classes out of my Loveland, Colorado art studio.  
On Wednesdays I teach beginning to intermediate watercolor.  We often experiment with a new technique or study at the start of the class then everyone has their own project that I help them progress on. I take student input for class ideas and fit their requests into the schedule.
Thursday is my oil painting class day.   I teach my students a new color study and/or technique then I encourage them to paint what they have passion for.   I want my students to be able to paint what they want; not to copy what I do.  I teach them independence. I want my students to be challenged but not overwhelmed.  I will take up to 5 students in each class so everyone gets plenty of individual attention.
I plan on continuing both classes weekly through May 2014, then will take the summertime to offer workshops and plein air paint.   If you are interested in attending, contact me

Painting from Life

Luau

Debut

A challenge I've given myself every week for 7 years now is to capture the human form from life, in just under 3 hours. I attend a weekly figurative (nude or costumed) life painting and drawing group with other artists of like mind.  I have brought a multitude of mediums but presently have been bringing my oil paints. "Luau" was painted on New Years Eve 2013 when our model resembled a Hawaiian dancer.  "Debut" was a first time model of a brand new model that was absolutely still. These two pieces were completed in the last few months.  Both are 9" X 12" original oils on canvas panels and are for sale.  Contact me for availability.

The Trumpet

"The Trumpet" is a brand new oil painting I painted mostly in my weekly figurative  life drawing/painting group.  One of our male models posed nude standing holding a trumpet. I especially liked how the light was back-lighting the top left of the painting so emphasized that.  This original 12" x 9" oil painting on canvas is presently for sale.  Contact me for details.

Escape

Escape

I finished this 12" X 9" oil in one of my weekly life drawing and painting sessions.  Our model was seated in a black lawn chair but did have on the bright blue hat.  I focused on capturing how the light was hitting her.  The next day in my art studio I decided to bring her to the beach which is where I imagined her.  This original oil painting will be in the Loveland Museum's summer 2014 show: Life and Figurative Drawing; Wild Life Sessions.

Vincent Van Moose

Vincent Van Moose

I painted this fun little (9" X 12") oil "Vincent Van Moose"  painting recently.  I was showing my home studio oil painting class how to pallet knife paint and decided to paint a moose.  I was inspired Van Gogh's Self Portrait series in that all of movement of the thick brush strokes radiate from the eye.  I exaggerated colors and had a ball with the Impressionistic swirls.
I sold this piece the same day I started advertising it on my Facebook page.  Prints are available through Fine Art America.

Verticle Aspens

These two new long tall (24" H X  8" W) original oil paintings of Aspens in Autumn are brand new.  They were inspired the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.  I have hiked in the nearby mountains on many gorgeous Fall days and look forward to it every year.

These paintings both have an atmospheric thin layer of oil paint for the blue mountains with heavy impasto pallet knife strokes for the foliage and foreground. Peaceful Pair

Under painting for the above roses

I painted "Peaceful Pair" twice this year.   A friend and fellow artist, Billie Colson was holding her annual fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis and looking for a variety of rose paintings to be donated and sold to benefit this organization.  I taught my home studio watercolor students how to do a purple underpainting with transparent watercolors.  They could choose my reference or one of their own.  The bottom painting was my donation (sold) at '65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis' for 2014.
My home studio oil painting students were interested in learning how to paint roses in oil as well. I used the same reference but used Transparent Oxide (oil) Red to get the drawing and values in before I laid a layer of oil on top.  The top two paintings are one in the same, the middle image is the under painting for the "Peaceful Pair" 8" x 10" oil painting on top.  Quite a few of my students donated one or more of their roses paintings, and several sold.  I'm so proud of them!

50 Shades

50 Shades

I just finished painting "50 Shades" (of Gray).  I decided to try to paint a small oil version of this 6" x 12" before I tackle a bigger one.  I like the way the miniature turned out so I feel better about enlarging this image.  This scene I encountered did not seem real it was so beautiful.  I was outside of the Prince of Whales hotel in Waterton, Alberta when the sun broke through the heavy cloud cover illuminating the fjords of southern Canada.  When I examined the dramatic values in the photo I saw beautiful purple grays and pink grays that I incorporated into the painting of the Rocky Mountains.  Grays can be quite stunning.

Aspire

Aspire

This new (24" x 12") vertical oil painting, "Aspire" was inspired by the towering trees on the coast of Maine.  I had the pleasure of visiting this part of the country this past summer.  We had a few days of rain, then one morning the clouds lifted and the sun shown through the thick forest.  The sun through the fog and trees was my favorite photo from the trip and I knew I wanted to paint it immediately.
